“Never take your eye off the long-term plan and never have a ceiling on how ambitious you want to be”
Alex Danson: I think if I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be: strive to be better in the short term, all of the time. But never take your eye off the future, never take your eye off the long term plan and never have a ceiling on how ambitious you want to be.
In our environment it’s all about short term gain. But it’s always with one eye on a longer term plan.
The next chapter in our career is the home World Cup, which is going to be wonderful for hockey in this nation and then, of course Tokyo 2020 is just around the corner.
In the long term future, last year we opened the Alex Danson Hockey Academy, which is aiming to engage 7-11 years olds, hopefully 10,000 by 2020.
Competing as a full-time athlete has so many skills that you can transfer and I’ve been I’ve been able to. Fundamentally the ability to work hard, to build a fantastic team around you. Also, to be incredibly resilient.
There’s always challenges that you come across in my sporting world and then also when you’re trying to set up something that involves so many young people, that has such high ambition. But I’d say that’s also the final thing that sport has given me – it’s… no ceiling.
